"This is our private channel, can you hear me?" - Orange Astronaut
In 2012, I wrote an electronic dance album for Mark Del Lima's birthday called 𝙏𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬 and the narrative chronicled the human journey to the moon after the Earth is ravaged by a deadly virus. Not only was this an exploration of my obsession with retrofuturism, it was a way for me to deal with my anxieties around sustainability, death and the future.
In 2020, The Svane Family Foundation commissioned 100 artists to reinterpret the narrative of "The Ark", a vessel that survives a disrupting event. I was one of those artists and I took 𝙏𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬 and transformed it into a visual piece, a sci-fi "visual album" (think 𝘕𝘢𝘲𝘰𝘺𝘲𝘢𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘪 meets 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘥: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭, or 𝘋𝘢𝘧𝘵 𝘗𝘶𝘯𝘬: 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 5555 ) that I designed to play on three square screens.
In 2021, The Svane Family Foundation presented ARK, a collection of 100 new works curated for auction at the San Francisco Art Institute, Fort Mason. Projected on three separate screens, Attack, Decay, Release was the only piece not up for auction and was exhibited in its own bespoke space for a month.
In 2022, Attack, Decay, Release won the grand prize at the Tallgrass Film Festival: The Stubbornly Independent Award.
The Complete Attack, Decay, Release is slated to be screened in its entirety with live accompaniment at The Exploratorium in San Francisco on June 1, 2023 featuring me, Anna Ishida, Carolyn Oliss, Seng Chen and Dan Staublin live and in-person! Stay tuned for updates here on hpmendoza.com!
